First to respond was Gerald Carstens and his mother Rina, (born Durie). They have proof of their family back to 1870 to the marriage of George Durie to Allison Purvis. George worked on a farm in Haddington, East Lothian, Scotland.
Their son David, born in 1872, became a highly respected teacher - his testimonials are fascinating - and later, in 1899, left for South Africa. In 1904 he married Judith Margaret (Edith) Rademeyer in Brandfoot, Free State, and had a large family. Not forgetting David's family's roots they called their house Haddington.
