Andrew Maule Dewar Durie of Durie, CBE DL

andrewdewar-durie1Chief of the Name and Arms of Durie, recognised by the Lord Lyon King of Arms as the 15th representer of the Duries of Durie of Craigluscar.

Son of Lt-Col Raymond Varley Dewar Durie of Durie, Andrew was educated at Wellington College and became a Captain in the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders, serving from 1958 to 1968 in Scotland, Wales and BAOR, and seeing active service in South-East Asia and Aden.

arms1-thumbAfter his military service, Andrew had a distinguished career in the whisky industry, as a Director of White Horse Distillers (1973-83), Long John International. (1983-88), James Burrough Ltd (1988-1991) and Allied Distillers Ltd (MD 1991-97, Chairman 1997-99). He was Chairman of CBI Scotland 1997-99 and President of the Edinburgh Royal Warrant Holders Association in 1999. Andrew is a member of the Glasgow Incorporation of Maltmen, a Liveryman of Worshipful Company of Distillers and is a Deputy Lieutenant of Dumbartonshire. He was awarded the CBE in 2000. Chairman of the Sea Fish Industry Authority from 2003 to 2008, he is also a Liveryman in the Worshipful Company of Fishmongers. Andrew served on the Board of the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo from 2000 to 2010, and was a member of the Executive Committee of the Standing Council of Scottish Chiefs until July 2010. He now focuses his time as a member of the Executive Committee of Erskine Homes for ex-servicemen and women in Scotland.

andrew-houseAndrew's home is at Finnich Malise in West Stirlingshire, on the edge of the Loch Lomond National Park, with his wife Marguerite, daughter of Graf Kunata and Grafin Marguerite Kottulinsky of Austria. They enjoy country pastimes, travelling and in particular their new venture, the conversion of the Steading buildings at Finnich Malise into holiday cottages.

Their daughter, Nicola Louise (b. 1974) a graduate of Edinburgh University and postgraduate of Bath University. She lives with her husband Adrian Helfert in Boulder, Colorado. They have a son Tristan Andrew (b. 2009). Nicola is CSR Manager for the Coors Brewery Group in Denver. James Alexander Maule Dewar Durie (Younger of Durie, b. 1978) was educated at Stowe School and graduated from Manchester University. He married Lady Alex Finch Knightley in Oct 2008. They live in London where he is a Manager with the sports marketing group Pitch International. Philip Anthony Varley Dewar Durie (b 1986) was educated at Glenalmond College then graduated from Leeds University. He works for Reuters Complinet in London, marketing compliance programmes to the financial services industry.

bullet LT-COL RAYMOND VARLEY DEWAR DURIE OF DURIE, (formerly Dewar-Durie), de jure 14th of Craigluscar; b 1905 at Isfahan, Persia, MID (1943), recognised by the Lord Lyon King of Arms in the name of DURIE OF DURIE, 1988, Lt-Col Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, served in WW II and overseas in Jamaica, China (as Liaison Officer in Shanghai when it fell to the Japanese, escaping to Chungking, a journey of 2,000 miles which took 3 months and for which he was mentioned in despatches), as Assistant Military Attaché in Nanking where he acted as interpreter during the evacuation of the wounded from HMS Amethyst in 1949.
